As a young couple we were living with our parents in Baltimore City and expecting our first child. We began the search for our own home. In our travels we discovered the small town of Bel Air and the surrounding countryside of Harford County. Harford County homes are so much more affordable than Baltimore homes and we loved the idea of moving from the city, to what, at the time, seemed like the country to us. This townhome was new construction and we were able to select some of the finishes. We were enchanted with the open floor plan and the bump outs on 3 levels. Little did we know that we were also moving into a great school district as well.
What upgrades have you made to enhance your home?
At the time we took occupancy, the house was practically perfect for us. Eventually, we upgraded the lighting fixtures and replaced the flooring in the sunroom. As we readied the house for sale in 2017, we painted the front door, professionally landscaped the entrance, and sodded the yard – all of which has really enhanced the curb appeal. We also added a 60-gallon hot water tank in 2017. In 2018 we repainted the downstairs in a neutral color – all furniture will look great with this color.
What are a few of your favorite features?
Our favorite feature of this townhouse is the open floor plan on the main level. It looks stunning when you enter - spacious, light-filled, and inviting. We really enjoy spending time together as a family and this floor plan makes that possible. We are not crowded or boxed in and there is plenty of elbow room for all of us. This is where we hang out.
The community of Emerald Hills has a wonderful Community Center with a fitness room and shower, a party room, a playground, and pool membership is included in the HOA dues. We are just steps from the pool; however, the way the community is landscaped, we are protected from the noise by a berm of trees. It is the best of both worlds. Our kids swim in the pool all summer. There are jogging paths within the community and lots of neighbors walk their dogs on the path.
We love the location of our home. It takes about 2 minutes to get to the grocery store for last minute items and we are only 10 minutes from work, with no traffic to fight. We are about 10 minutes from 95 and love to head to Philadelphia or Baltimore for the art museums and symphonies.
What else do you like about living in area?
We love the town of Bel Air. We are just minutes away. We have done it all - First Fridays, the Bel Air BBQ Bash, and Thursday’s Ladies Night Out. We enjoy the 4th of July Celebrations and the Christmas parade. We have season tickets to the Susquehanna Symphony Concerts which are held at Bel Air High School or in the Town Park. We can’t say enough about the children’s programs at the Bel Air Library such as LEAP (Learn, Explore & Play) and the summer reading program. Bel Air has a small-town feel - cute shops, and independently owned eateries. We like to stroll down Main Street to check out what is new in the shops and sit outside at the Sunny Day Cafe. We also enjoy Rockfield Manor. It is an old mansion with beautiful grounds. Periodically local artists’ works are displayed - paintings, jewelry, and pottery - and all are of a high caliber. And we never miss their spring Kite Show.
Where do you eat and shop for groceries and other conveniences?
We like shopping for groceries at Safeway and Target. Bel Air is home to hundreds of national chains – you will never be at a loss for spending your money. We love sushi and our favorite place is Bamboo Garden. We also recommend the brunch with the bottomless mimosas at Alchemy Elements. For dessert we head over to Rita’s or Arctic Circle for soft ice cream.

We can’t say enough about our great neighborhood, Emerald Hills. Whether you are a young couple, single, retired, with or without kids or dogs you will feel at home in this community. The Community Association is active, homeowners have a voice, and as a result the homes have retained their value. The Community Center is a great gathering place and the summertime fun can’t be beat. We love living in this area so much, with the shopping, the great schools, and the convenience, we moved only a few minutes away. We have great memories in our first home and we know the new owners will create a wonderful life here too.
